Guide To Moving To Mallorca, First NIE First.
If you’re an EU citizen planning to move to Mallorca, here’s a brief guide on how to turn your dream of living on the island into reality. First and foremost, you need to know about an essential document that is indispensable for your stay, the NIE number.
What is a NIE Number?
The NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) is not just a bureaucratic requirement, but a key to many aspects of your daily life in Mallorca. It’s crucial for anyone planning to move or spend significant time on the island. You’ll need it to open a bank account, sign a rental agreement, or make contracts for a car or scooter. Without this number, foreign residents in Spain cannot work or make any major financial transactions.
Where do you get this NIE number?
In Mallorca, you must go to the Oficina de Extranjería in the Poligono de Levante in Palma de Mallorca.
Acquiring your NIE
The process of obtaining the NIE for EU citizens is straightforward and manageable. For the latest requirements, visit your local police station—Comisaría de Policía—or the foreigners’ department—Oficina de Extranjería—.
With the waiting time included, it will take about one to two hours to organize your NIE number, making the process easy and smooth. Remember, the documents will be in Spanish, so if you don’t speak Spanish, have your translator handy or bring a friend who does.
Making an appointment
Before heading to the Oficina de Extranjería, you must make an appointment online. The link we provide to the appointment service goes to the Sede Electrónica from the Spanish Government.

Before you are assigned your NIE number, you must pay ca. 9,45€. In the Oficina de Extranjería, you get the payment form. Take it to a bank (often, banks accept cash payments only at certain hours and on certain days, so you might even have to open a bank account. Once you have paid the fee, you return to the Oficina de Extranjería, where you will get a certificate showing your NIE number.
If you are a non-EU citizen, you should also hand in a notary certification explaining why you would like to get your NIE (e.g., property purchase). This kind of certification costs about 60€. You must bring your passport or identity card and a copy of it.
